Industry Overview

The convergence of computing, networking, communication and wireless technologies is enabling wireless and mobile communication when before it was possible only through fixed lines. Today, wireless handheld devices are able to deliver voice communication, data transmission, basic text or multimedia messaging, e-mail transmission and reception, still photos and short video clips, and downloadable games. The same convergence of technologies has spurred the growth of mobile commerce, mobile entertainment, location-based services and smart vehicles.
The promise of mobile and wireless connectivity and communication at much lower costs will continue to fuel growth in this market worldwide. Data from Esmertec, a leading provider of software solutions and technologies for mobile phones and embedded devices, forecast mobile subscribers worldwide to reach 2 billion users by 2008 from 1.5 billion users in 2004. Half of the new subscribers are expected to come from the Asia-Pacific.

Data from market research firm Canalys indicate that the worldwide shipment of smart pocket-sized mobile devices rose 82 percent year-on-year (YoY) in Q1 2005. Although shipments for basic handhelds declined by 6 percent, shipments of converged devices climbed by 137 percent.

According to the IDC, shipments of converged mobile devices combining mobile phone, organizer and other functions rose nearly 135 percent in Q1 2005 from 8.4 million units in Q1 2004. This was despite a 3.6 percent decline from Q4 2004.

The market for smart phones, in particular, is expected to continue rising, with global shipments forecast to reach 125 million units by 2009 from 14.6 million units in 2003. Market research firm ARC Group forecast that this market will account for 16 percent of the overall mobile phone market, up from the 3 percent share it captured in 2003.

The market uptake in the mobile WLAN sector that was experienced in 2004 and early 2005 is expected to persist through the coming years. In-Stat predicts that by 2010, there will be 296 million WLAN-enabled mobile phones on the market, and 46 percent of these handsets will be capable of voice over WLAN (VoWLAN).
