VoIP Products

VoIP product shipments from Greater China totaled at least 10.70 million units in 2004, accounting for 55 percent of the total worldwide shipment of 19.47 million units. Shipments from Greater China in 2005 are projected to grow by at least 87 percent to reach 19.96 million units. This export volume will account for 82 percent of the worldwide shipment volume of 24.46 million VoIP products projected by Taiwan's Market Intelligence Center (MIC). While Greater China's VoIP export volume will increase further to 22.66 million units in 2006, the region's share of the worldwide market will drop to 61 percent. The MIC projects total worldwide shipments of VoIP products will reach 37.18 million units in 2006.

Two-way Radios and Accessories

Greater China's two-way radio market is experiencing continued expansion, marked by increasing output and exports from manufacturers in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Total production in 2004 was estimated at 24.8 million units, of which 95 percent or 23.6 million units were exported. The forecast output and export figures for 2005 are 34.5 million units and 32.5 million units, respectively.

Set-top Boxes

In-Stat estimates global set-top box (STB) exports in 2005 at 59 million units. About 29 million or 49 percent will be shipped from mainland China. According to Taiwan's Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), 6.08 million STBs will be shipped from Taiwan this year, taking up 10 percent of world shipments.

Satellite Receivers

Mainland China's satellite receiver industry is entering a pivotal phase this year, as it expands production and market reach to further engage the international market. With total exports for 2003 exceeding 5 million units, mainland China accounted for 12 percent to 14 percent of the worldwide market of 35 million to 40 million satellite receivers last year. The country's overall production during the same period reached more than 6 million units.

PBXs

The PBX manufacturing industries in Taiwan and mainland China are projected to rebound after years of slow growth as makers shift from traditional wired and analog PBXs to wireless and IP PBXs. In addition, the trend towards packet-switching and converged data and voice worldwide will speed up product development efforts and release of new and value-added PBXs.

Networking Switches & Hubs

Manufacturers of networking switches and hubs across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, collectively referred to as Greater China, are expanding their output and exports in 2006 to boost their 11 percent share of the thriving worldwide networking market garnered in 2005. The reason for the surging optimism is the success of mainland China's Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd in the worldwide market. Huawei ranked as the world's second largest player in the secure router market in 2005, closely trailing Cisco and surpassing Nortel.

Mobile Voice and Data Communication Products

In 2005, makers of mobile voice and data communication products in Taiwan and mainland China will account for at least 64 percent of the projected worldwide shipments of a minimum of 125.72 million units, excluding PDAs and smart phones. The projected export volume from Taiwan and mainland China for 2005 is 80.20 million units. This will comprise mobile phone products such as smart phones, Wi-Fi phones and 3G phones, as well as WLAN routers, gateways, access points (APs), cards, and combination GSM and WLAN devices.

Mainland China and Taiwan produced 290.15 million mobile phones in 2004, of which 69 percent or 200.01 million units were exported. The export volume accounted for 29 percent of the total worldwide shipments for 2004 of 680.5 million mobile phones, according to the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) of Taiwan's Industrial Technology and Research Institute (ITRI).

Mobile Phone Headsets

The mobile phone headset manufacturing industries in Greater China, comprising mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, experienced significant growth in 2005, and will expand further in 2006. Supply and export volumes are expected to continue rising this year. As the expanding supplier base addresses the convergence of functions and applications, R&D efforts will be geared toward new technologies, products and designs.

GPS Devices

The Industrial Economics & Knowledge Center (IEK) of Taiwan's Industrial Technology and Research Institute (ITRI) estimates worldwide GPS production volume in 2005 at 101.30 million units. This will mean a 53 percent growth from 66 million units made in 2004. Another 41 percent growth in output is projected by the IEK for 2006, during which output could reach 143.20 million units.

Cordless Phones

Worldwide trends emphasizing digital technology and expanded applications are sustaining Greater China's cordless phone industry despite the steady decline in demand for fixed line phones. The shrinking supplier population — more than 50 makers from over 100 suppliers in early 2005 — is staying afloat by shifting to digital from analog, and to high frequencies from low frequencies. These R&D and production shifts, projected in the Cordless Phones: Supplier capability in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, published in January 2005, have driven the growth of 2.4GHz and DECT cordless phones.

Corded Phones

Growth in the mature corded phone manufacturing industry in Greater China, comprising mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, will be sustained by rising output and technological innovations. Makers will also invest in product innovations to stimulate demand. Total production during 2004 was estimated at 151.96 million units. Exports for the same period reached 103.69 million units, representing 68 percent of output. The projected output and export volumes for 2005 are 181.36 million and 125.65 million units, respectively.

Broadband Communication

Aggregate worldwide broadband product shipments, including cable modems and DSL products but excluding optical networking products, reached 64.25 million units in 2004. Forecasts from Taiwan's Market Intelligence Center (MIC) indicate a 9% growth in 2005, during which shipments will reach 70.08 million units. In 2006, the projected worldwide shipments for DSL products alone is 58.99 million units.

Bluetooth Devices

Total worldwide shipments of Bluetooth devices are forecast to exceed 200 million units in 2005. The Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) estimated 2005 worldwide shipments at 213.8 million units.

2.5G & 3G Phones

Mainland China and Taiwan combined accounted for 28 percent of the worldwide shipments of 2.5G and 3G phones in 2005. The aggregate shipments of 2.5G and 3G phones from both supply markets reached 207.36 million units in 2005. Worldwide shipments for the same year totaled 750 million units, based on data from Taiwan's Market Intelligence Center.
