China's hinge industry continues to perform well despite a relatively small supplier base of about 100 volume makers. Exports in 2004 exceeded US$350 million, growing 27 percent from 2003 shipments. The industry is on track for another good year as shipments for January to May 2005 have risen 23 percent from the same period in 2004.

China shipped 661,000 tons of hardware fasteners in the first quarter of 2006, registering an almost 30 percent increase over export volume in the same period last year. Growth projections show outbound shipments will reach 3 million tons by the end of the year, further boosting the country's position as the largest exporter of hardware fasteners in the world.

Export growth rates of China-made hand tools have consistently averaged 20 percent over the past several years. Outbound shipments for 2004 far exceeded this average, increasing 28 percent from US$493 million in 2003 to US$630 million. However, the industry grew by about 14 percent in terms of volume, indicating a rise in export prices and an increase in overseas shipments of high-value professional hand tools.

With China's exports of hand and water-management tools totaling US$123 million for 2003 alone, and powered tools growing, China is one of the world's major producers of gardening tools and is well on its way to the top.

Suppliers in China offer three basic types of gardening tools—hand tools, powered tools and water-management equipment. Because hand tools are the easiest and most inexpensive to produce, they dominate production and exports. The relatively mature product line accounts for about 70 percent of gardening tool exports from China.

China exported US$1.4 billion worth of floor and wall tiles in the 11-month period covering January to November 2004. This was a 27 percent increase over the US$1.1 billion worth of outbound shipments generated in the whole of 2003.

However, rising production costs and a shortage of raw materials have forced most tile makers to raise prices by as much as 50 percent. More adjustments are forecast if the situation does not improve. The supplier base might also shrink as small makers, incapable of dealing with soaring production costs, close down. This may result in a slowdown of exports for 2005 ...

China has exported more than US$1 billion worth of faucets in each of the past two years and is well on its way to shipping at least US$1.5 billion of the product this year. China's overseas shipments of doors and windows are expected to exceed US$1 billion in 2006. Exports from January to May have crossed US$447 million, soaring 50 percent over shipments in the same period last year. The impressive growth is likely to continue for the rest of 2006 as demand from foreign markets increases steadily and more suppliers move away from the fiercely competitive domestic market to concentrate on exports.

China's exports of ceramic sanitaryware in the 11 months to November 2005 soared 47 percent from the same period in 2004, closely mirroring the 50 percent average growth rate the industry has registered since 2001. This year will be no different as more suppliers focus on expanding their business overseas, particularly in high-end markets such as the US and the EU.

China is forecast to export more than US$1.8 billion worth of ceiling and wall-mounted light fixtures in 2006. Overseas shipments have already exceeded the average 26 percent growth rate of the past two years, rising 28 percent in the first half of 2006 from the same period in 2005.
