Writing Instruments

Sports ball exports from China are rising steadily as more overseas buyers are sourcing from the country and more suppliers continue to enhance the quality of their products while keeping prices relatively low.

If current growth rates are sustained, overseas shipments in the line could exceed US$500 million by the end of 2006. In the first quarter of 2006, China suppliers exported 319 million sports balls worth almost US$145 million, an increase of 25 percent in volume and 37 percent in value terms.

China exported 391 million small kitchen appliances worth US$4.2 billion in the 10 months to October 2005, a year-on-year increase of 30 percent in terms of value and 14 percent in volume. While export sales have been rising steadily since we last reviewed the industry in April 2004, growth rate in terms of volume has decreased dramatically — from 30 percent in 2003 to less than 15 percent in 2005.

Small Household Appliances

China exported US$4 billion worth of small household appliances in 2004, an increase of 33 percent from the previous year. In terms of volume, the country shipped 677 million appliances, up 24 percent from a year ago.

The growth trend is expected to continue in 2005 as export sales have already increased 27 percent in the period January to July.

The scooter manufacturing industry in China is undergoing a major shift in its production strategies as it tries to combat recent changes in regulations from its major export market, the United States.

Mainland China supplies approximately 60 percent of the world's lightweight scooters, and exports, as expected, have been expanding since Global Sources published its first report on Scooters in December 2003.

China produced about 30 million household refrigerators in 2004, including 6 million portable refrigerators, accounting for an estimated 30 percent of global output. Twelve million units worth US$777 million were exported, mainly to the European Union, United States, Asia and the Middle East. Refrigerator and freezer exports together amounted to US$1 billion.

China is the world's largest exporter of personal grooming appliances. The country accounts for approximately 75 percent of all of the EU's imports, with China-made shavers making up more than 90 percent of the region's total imports of the product.

Outdoor Furniture

China produces more than half of the world's output of outdoor furniture. In 2004, the country's exports amounted to an estimated US$2 billion, or roughly 90 percent of its total production.
The majority of China's output consists of metal outdoor furniture, which accounted for 70 percent of the country's exports at US$1.4 billion. Wooden outdoor furniture exports were at US$400 million, and plastic outdoor furniture exports amounted to US$200 million. With demand increasing in the main export markets of the European Union, Asia and the United States, shipments in 2005 are expected to grow by 20 percent.

Massagers

China's exports of massagers are rising and will continue to grow as an increasing number of foreign buyers discover the country's competitive pricing and more suppliers upgrade their products.

In the period January to July 2006, the country exported almost 58 million massagers worth US$395 million. This represents an increase of nearly 37 percent in value and 48 percent in volume.

Living Room Furniture

China exported about $5 billion worth of living room furniture in 2004. This figure accounted for approximately 30 percent of all furniture exports from the country. In terms of volume, overseas shipments comprised an estimated 15 million coffee and end tables, 7 million sofas and 5 million entertainment units.

Home Textiles

China is the world's leading supplier of home textiles, with exports in 2004 rising 24 percent to reach $4.7 billion. The elimination of quotas on certain home textile products in January 2005 helped accelerate export growth even further. Overseas shipments in the first five months of 2005 amounted to $2.2 billion soaring 40 percent year-on-year.

Health Monitors

China's health monitor exports are on the rise as demand from major markets continues to grow and makers enhance the quality of their products.

In the first four months of 2006, health monitor exports from China amounted to US$214 million, up 10 percent from the same period in the previous year. Overseas shipments are expected to increase about 20 percent by the end of 2006. In 2005, suppliers shipped out US$673 million worth of products, a year-on-year increase of 18 percent.

Gambling Supplies

Exports of playing cards and gambling tables from China are increasing — even as overall gambling supplies continue to follow a downward sales trend. Specifically, US$20 million worth of playing cards, or nearly 180 million decks, were shipped from January through May 2006 compared with 171 million decks worth US$19 million during the same period in 2005.

Flatware

China produces 55 percent of the world's output of flatware. Makers in the country have the capacity to produce a total of 12 billion pieces annually.

In 2004, flatware exports amounted to an estimated 8.4 billion pieces with a value of US$882 million. Manufacturers in China rely heavily on export revenue as local sales account for a mere fraction of their output.

Fitness Equipment

China's fitness equipment export industry has been experiencing extremely high growth rates in the past few years. In the period January to July 2005, overseas shipments in the line from China suppliers amounted to US$908 million, an increase of 42 percent from the same period in the previous year. If this rate of growth is sustained for the rest of the year, which seems very likely, overseas shipments will cross the US$1.8 billion mark.

Fishing Equipment

China is the leading producer and exporter of basic fishing equipment, particularly rods, reels and lures. The country exported 61 million fishing rods in 2004, a 10 percent increase from the year before. Reel exports grew 14 percent to reach 47 million units in 2004.

Dinnerware

China's dinnerware exports are on the rise as demand from major markets continues to grow and makers enhance the quality of their products.

The country exported US$2.8 billion worth of porcelain, ceramic, melamine and plastic dinnerware in 2005, a yearon- year increase of 25 percent.

Cookware

Export growth rates of China-made cookware have declined considerably in the past year. While exports in terms of value grew by 23 percent in 2003, growth rate dropped to 13 percent in January to November 2004, as compared with the same period in the previous year. Correspondingly, the export volume growth rate was 20 percent in 2003, but plummeted to 6 percent in 2004.

Cooktops, Hoods and Ovens

China's overseas shipments of cooktops, hoods and ovens are on the rise as demand from the Middle East, Asia and the US continues to grow and more suppliers move away from the fiercely competitive domestic market to focus on exports.

From January through June 2006, China makers exported approximately US$801 million worth of cooking appliances, an increase of 27 percent from the same period of the previous year.

Clocks

Seventy percent of global clock supply is produced in China, where 1,000 small-to-large suppliers make a full range of analog and digital clocks. The United States imported more than one-third of China's total output of US$450 million in 2003.

Christmas Trees and Lights

China exported US$1.8 billion worth of Christmas-related articles including trees, lights and ornaments in the 10 months to October 2005. This is an increase of about 12 percent from shipments in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Bicycles

China is the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the world, accounting for 80 percent of global output. The country produced 78 million bicycles in 2004, of which 51 million units worth US$1.6 billion were exported.

Although export sales grew by a healthy 14.5 percent last year, growth in terms of volume was only 2.4 percent, a sharp decline from the 11 percent increase registered in 2003. The higher growth rate in value terms last year can be attributed to a rise in export prices and to an increase in shipments of electric bikes, which are more expensive than other types of bicycles. From January to April 2004, the average price of a bicycle exported from China was US$32, and it climbed to US$34 over the same period in 2005. Export volume growth, on the other hand, was lower in part due to a dip in shipments to Japan, the country's second-largest market.

Air Conditioners

China continues to be the world's largest producer and exporter of air conditioners. The country manufactures an estimated 60 percent of global output in the line. It is also the largest exporter of air conditioners, accounting for a little over 30 percent of total global exports, followed by Thailand with a 14 percent share and Italy 7 percent.
