Zippers

China's zippers and parts industry has been growing an average 18 percent for the past five years. At US$207.7 million, exports from January to October 2004 are up 23 percent over the same period in the previous year. Finished and semifinished zippers account for 79 percent of shipments and the rest are zipper parts. About 15 percent of the staggering 21.2 billion meters of annual zipper output is exported, while the rest is sold to domestic manufacturers and exporters.

Women's Undergarments

China's US$2 billion women's undergarment export industry is facing barriers at home and abroad that threaten to limit the explosive growth suppliers anticipated post-quota.

In 2004, total outbound shipments increased 20 percent from 3.5 billion to 4.2 billion pieces. Exports to the United States and the European Union increased in the first quarter of this year, but were down 17 percent overall despite quota elimination as a recent government-imposed tax affected growth in low-value products.

T-shirts and Polo Shirts

China's booming T-shirt and polo-shirt industry is poised for more than 30 percent export sales growth in 2005.

At US$3.3 billion, exports in the first nine months of 2004 already surpass 2003 shipments of US$3.2 billion. By the end of this year, exports are expected to cross the US$4 billion mark.

Swimwear

China is the world's largest exporter of swimwear, accounting for approximately 70 percent of global shipments.

With steadily growing demand, exports continue to show strong growth. Most suppliers are anticipating overseas shipments to increase by at least 20 percent in 2006. Exports in the beginning of 2006 have already increased by more than 20 percent in value.

Sleepwear

China accounted for approximately 60 percent of the world's output of sleepwear in 2005. More than 10,000 exporters of sleepwear shipped out US$1.6 billion worth of the products in the same year.

As with most garment industries in China, sleepwear makers enjoyed significant growth in the first few months after the WTO textile quotas were eliminated. Export volume in the first two months of 2005 grew by 46 percent and sales, 29 percent, compared with the previous corresponding period. Exports from January to November 2005 to the US alone were 231 percent more than total outbound shipments to the country in 2004.

Parkas & Windbreakers

China's 12,000 exporters of parkas and windbreakers shipped out US$3.8 billion worth of the products in the 10 months to October 2005. It is estimated that 85 percent of the country's exports in the line are go to OEM and ODM customers.

The US is the largest importer of China-made parkas and windbreakers, purchasing 63.8 million pieces worth US$591 million from January to October 2005. In terms of volume, Japan is afar second, importing about 40 million pieces worth US$438 million in the same 10-month period.

Leather Garments

Leather garment exports from China have been decreasing over the past couple of years and are expected to continue declining through 2007. In spite of this, the country continues to lead global exports of the product.

According to statistics from the United Nations, China manufacturers captured a 64 percent share of world leather garment exports in 2005. Decreasing overseas shipments, however, are resulting in consolidation of the industry and a shift to other markets and product lines.

Knitted Fabric

China's knitted fabric export industry is poised for growth, after recovering from a slowdown in the first few months of 2005.

The country's nearly 3,000 exporters shipped close to US$3 billion worth of knitted fabric in 2004, registering 17 percent growth. But exports slowed at the beginning of the following year as orders from garment-exporting countries in Asia, China's main market for knitted fabric, decreased. These garment makers suffered from the lifting of WTO quotas in January, with many of their overseas buyers turning to China for their apparel sourcing.

Denim Garments

China, the world's largest denim garment supplier, produced 30 percent of total global output in 2004.

That year, the country's 4,000 manufacturers shipped US$1.8 billion worth of denim garments, mainly to the United States and Europe. Exports were up 10 percent over the previous year. They are forecast to grow an additional 20 percent in 2005 as demand for China-made denim garments is expected to increase significantly in the months following quota elimination.
