Mainland China's decades-old speakers industry is strong and growing. According to the main industry body — China Audio Industries Association — output in four major speaker categories — home theater speakers with 5.0 or more channels, computer multimedia speakers, Hi-Fi speakers and subwoofer satellite systems — will grow from 60.5 million units in 2003 to nearly 69 million units this year. This means a revenue climb from US$1.7 billion last year to a projected US$1.87 billion by year-end 2004.

The Greater China region, spanning mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, accounts for about 80 percent of the world's remote control production. The total current monthly production volume is estimated at 100 million units, based on data from the companies in this report. The total monthly capacity is 148 million remote controls.

Global supply of optical recording media is centered in Taiwan and mainland China. Although there are only 15 suppliers of optical discs in Taiwan, the island accounts for more than half of the world's production volume.

Estimates provided by the market research firm Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) show that Taiwan produced a total volume of 10.1 billion units of optical discs in 2004, comprising 72 percent of the worldwide production of 14 billion units.

Mainland China and Taiwan account for a fifth of total global shipments of radio sets. According to a World Trade Organization agency, the region has maintained its worldwide lead in radio exports since 1999.

Radios are large-volume exports of mainland China. The area's production in 2004 was 310 million radios, worth approximately US$340 million.

Portable DVD player manufacturers in Greater China — mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — are forecast to export at least 8.6 million units in 2006, or more than half of the estimated global shipments of 13.5 million units. Greater China's production is based on the aggregate annual output estimates of 27 key manufacturers covered in this report.

With global shipments seeing up to 20 percent year-on-year growth rates, MP3 players are still a strong product line after about six years since it first entered mass production.

Today, Greater China manufacturers account for the bulk of MP3 players being produced worldwide. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan shared 52.21 percent of global production — with the mainland accounting for 23 percent, Hong Kong 18 percent, and Taiwan 9 percent — based on 2005 figures.

Microphones come in different forms and shapes for use in home entertainment, public broadcast and professional audio systems. In recent years, the industry's focus has shifted to wireless microphones in the mid-range and high-end segments as manufacturers strive continuously to capitalize on product lines with higher profit margins. Wireless microphones and microphone systems accounted for half of the industry's 2005 output.

The growth of the in-car entertainment industry is driven by the estimated 3 percent to 5 percent market growth rate in global car output, which is currently at 60 million units.

Industry analysts observe that increased market demand for cars with combined DVD player and navigation functions would be one of the main drivers for suppliers' export growth.

Home theater system (HTS) production in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan is picking up after a slowdown in 2004, fueled by the increasing popularity of digital entertainment and digital home concepts, as well as wireless technologies such as Bluetooth. From an output level of 7.5 million units worth US$1.65 billion in 2004, Greater China is foreseen to manufacture up to 10.8 million units worth US$2.12 billion in 2007, according to Global Sources' Consumer Electronics China Industry Outlook report in 2005.

Expanding production volume and use of new technologies are providing momentum to Greater China's mature headphone manufacturing industry. The region, which spans mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, currently accounts for 60 percent of the global supply of headphones. Mainland China alone dominates the worldwide export market for low-end and mid-range headphones with a 90 percent share.

The gaming devices industries in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are foreseen to enjoy a robust growth in the medium term. Global worldwide production valued at US$24 billion in 2005 is projected to reach US$55 billion in 2009.

The growth of the industry is being driven by the development of hardware and software as well as the increasing numbers and expanding demographics of gamers all over the world. The approximate distribution of gamers according to types of games is as follows: 140 million gamers for consoles, 200 million for PC games and 100 million for handheld games. More than 60 percent of these gamers are more than 18 years of age.

The global digital camera business was estimated to be worth US$24 billion in 2004. A significant part of this business comes from mainland China and Taiwan — regions which have become known as major digital camera supply bases over the past few years. Industry analysts regard mainland China as being the primary source of low-cost digital cameras. Taiwan, for its part, is credited with a 30 percent share of the digital camera market, following industry leader Japan.
